Your creations are very complex, where do you get your inspiration from?

It's an interesting question and my answer may be a bit philosophical, but I think that complexity is not just the property of an object, it also says something about how we ourselves are able to perceive something. Think about when you went to school, some subject was very difficult in the beginning and your brain was trying hard to understand, but once it did, everything would fall into place and you would exclaim "oh wow, now it's clear to me", and so at that point it wasn't complex anymore. That feeling is very satisfying and allows you to discover beauty where you did not expect to find it before or did not think it existed. So for me it is much more interesting and satisfying in the long run when something invites me to spend time with it and explore it. My favorite books, movies, records all have in common that they've had to spend a lot of time and put in some effort to understand their beauty. Of course, there was already something in the beginning that had piqued my interest. It's like when you fall seriously in love. So the complexity in my perfumes does not mean that I want to be an intellectual and do complicated things, on the contrary, I think the experience of discovery is what makes you want to go back to a certain place. And so my inspiration works too. It can be anything, I'm always looking for beauty and once I find it I try to transfer it into a perfume.

How has your Ph. D. in neuroscience influenced your way of making perfumes?

My Ph. D and my scientific background helped me a lot in the lab and I don't think it's a coincidence that I studied Psychology. I'm interested in what's beneath the surface and I really enjoy watching. All of this came full circle when I decided to make perfumes.

What does "niche and artistic perfumery" mean to you?

Honestly it's nothing more than a wrap. Today these terms are so inflated that they have almost lost their meaning. It is all in the eye of the beholder because there is no official school in perfumery. This means that mediocrity is also present in this business. Personally, I only care that a perfume has a soul, all the other labels leave me indifferent, of course they don't tell you these things on the packaging.

What are the next steps for the perfumery market in general?

I don't know, it's hard to say. One thing is for sure, many (niche) brands that started 10 years ago will likely quit games sooner or later because they will have realized that it is not at all easy to sustain themselves economically in the niche market (even if it is a growing segment nonetheless). For me, as a perfumer, it is very nice to see how the concept of fragrance is expanding into various fields beyond that of perfumery. The fragrances are beginning to be appreciated for the experience they entail. I am very lucky to have joined Delush, a Dutch company specializing in spreading and developing flavors of all kinds, for shops, hotels, restaurants and perhaps, soon, we will be able to see fragrances used in the field of performing arts. theaters etc. (just like the sets and lights). Last but not least, I think that in the next few years we will see the spread of artificial intelligence based perfumery, and again I can say that I am lucky and privileged to work with Scentronix, to make AI perfumery a reality!
