The announcement on his IG page: he was one of the most important names in fashion photography of the twentieth century

His black and white shots, which have portrayed the most important supermodel of the 90s, have marked an era and redefined the canons of fashion photography of the last decades.

The photographer Peter Lindbergh is dead on September 3 at 74 years old. The announcement was made on his Instagram page by his closest collaborators, illustrated by one of his latest shots in black & white.

Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford, Milla Jovovich, Kate Mossthese are just some of the super tops who posed for him and his camera, images that have remained in the hearts of fashion addicts and beyond.

Born on January 23, 1944 in Leszno (now part of Poland), he grew up in Duisburg, where he started working as a shop window dresser. In the 1970s he began to take up photography as an assistant to Hans Lux.

But it was the 80s that consecrated him as one of the best known fashion photographers: his elegant and clean style, his black and white defined but never too much, that cinematraphic allure of the composition, had conquered many newspapers (New Yorker, Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone and Harper's Bazaar), but has linked a large part of his works on one in particular: Vogue, for which he worked for several editions, first the Italian one, then the English, French, German and American ones, creating some of the most iconic coversof the history of publishing.

Many celeb(just to name a few: Mick Jagger, Tina Turner, Madonna and Sharon Stone) pass in front of her camera, immortalized in costly shots now in the collections of the most important museums in the world, such as MoMa's PS1 in New York, the V&A in London and the Center Pompidou in Paris.

Lindbergh was also one of the photographers to have worked for the celebrated The Cal, the iconic Pirelli calendar: the first already in 1966, the second in 2002 and the last in 2017 where he had chosen to immortalize a group of actresses it's a political science professor, all dressed and aged between 27 and 71 years.

His last work was the special issue of Vogue UK, directed by Edward Enninful and with the special collaboration of the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle. Lindbergh had portrayed her 15 women chosen by Markle to talk about the change that society has been affecting in recent years: from the #MeToo movement to female empowerment.

The elegance of her photos, the ability to portray women at any age and make them special in their simplicity, without too many artifices (and photo retouching) will remain forever in the history of photography - not just in fashion.
