James Franco talks about the depression that has plagued him since he was a boy and talks about how he fights it with dance and surfing

James Franco suffered from loneliness and depression, but now he seems to have gotten out of it. He himself admits it in an interview with Out magazine, telling how dance and surfing helped him in this new phase of his life.

Actor, director, writer and artist, Franco was able to transform his restless soul into art, as shown by his last role, double, in The Deuce, a TV series in which she plays twins who find themselves working for the Italian-American mafia in 1970s New York.

Here are the more interesting excerpts from the interview.

I have an addictive personality

“I have an addictive personality. When I was a teenager I have come across some forms of addiction and it was at that moment that I turned to acting, when I was 17 ", recalls Franco, who had already told in another interview recently for the W magazine:

“I started acting in the last year of high school. I've always loved watching movies, then finally I threw myself into it ».

To pay for the acting school James worked at Mc Donald's, approaching clients to practice speaking with different accents.

About the depression

The actor talks about what he is like thrown headlong into acting to try to defeat his demons:

"I put my all into it, it had become my whole life, to the point that I didn't even socialize.

And then, after ten years of all this, when I was now 27, I realized: "Man, I'm so depressed".

At first glance my life seemed pretty good, I had a career and all, but I felt isolated and alone.

So I enrolled in college, but again it was just a way to run and escape the problem ».

A new life

Now James seems to be going through one new phase of his life, more serene:

“I started learning to surf and I'm enrolled in the International Dance Academy on Hollywood Boulevard to take hip-hop lessons.

It's kind of therapy for me. I started a new chapter of my life.

I was too dependent on work and other things, but not substances, those I abandoned them a long time ago.

But I turned my life around and these activities are part of my therapy ».

The career as a director

Many have noticed the James's turn towards the director, but do not worry: the actor has not no intention of giving up acting.

“I have to say that of all the things I've done the role of director is the role that I enjoy the most, because you are dealing with so many creative minds.

But no, I'm not going to stop acting

Many actors come to a point in their life where they have to adjust to what they are doing and why they are doing it.

And for me, after going back to school and trying to do everything I've done, this new chapter, with surfing and dancing, is really a time when I want to slow down and focus on fewer things, but in a deeper way, quality-oriented,”he explained.

Back to the cinema

After the television experience with The Deuce, James will return to the big screen in December with a new project, which he directed, co-produced and performed.

Let's talk about The Disaster Artist, the film based on the novel of the same name by Greg Sestero and Tom Bissell che tells of the troubled friendship right between Sestero and Tommy Wiseau, creator of the film The Room, which was defined as "one of the worst films ever made" and for this reason it has become a cult.
