A brief (fashion) history of grunge, the style that still fascinates Millennials and Gen Z today
Each generation has had its own subculture characterized by a well-defined style that has remained in history. In the 60s there were hippies, from the mid 70s punk and in the late 80s and early 90s the grunge.
Born within the Seattle music scene, the grunge became famous thanks to bands like i Nirvana, i Soundgarden, i Pearl Jam and i Mudhoney. Fans of this musical genre and the musicians themselves, as opposed to punk and hippie, they didn't want to shout any message to the world, but they preferred reflect on themselves, on issues such as loneliness and disillusionment and discomfort with an increasingly alien world.
Their style, only apparently "unkempt" and not studied at all, represented a "non-fashion", it was composed of flannel shirts, unmade jeans, used shoes and amphibians, graphic t-shirts, denim, and whatever that eliminated the silhouette of the body emphasizing a functional look, come on dark tones it is made up discordant "textures".
The world suddenly "noticed" grunge in 1991, year in which i Nirvana released their acclaimed second album Nevermind. From there, their clothing style made its way into the fashion system thanks to Vogue's iconic fashion shoot " Grunge & Glory " edited by Grace Coddington and shot by Steven Meisel of the 1992. This was followed by the collections of that period: Perry Ellis S / S 93, Calvin Klein S / S 93 And 94, Anna Sui S / S 93 And 94, And Christian Francis RothS / S 93.
This curious "marriage" was even considered a oxymoron: explains it well James Truman, editor-in-chief of Details, when he said in 1993: “For me, grunge is not anti-fashion, it really is the absence of it. Punk was anti-fashion. He sent a message. Grunge, on the other hand, doesn't want to send it, which makes it even more senseless how it has become an inspiration for the fashion world."
In any case, despite everything and everyone, grunge is healthier than ever, it is still there, on the catwalks - just think of Saint Laurent by Hedi Slimane - and worn by the new generations who still look to grunge music today, such as Sky Ferreira and DIIV. The reason could be that it was the last true artistic subculturethat has made its way into the mainstream. Which now happens much more rarely due to the social networks that unite (and homologate) everyone immediately. This, coupled with the nostalgia that characterizes the Millennials and Gen Z, has meant that too the younger generations took inspiration from Kurt Cobain & Co. in the way of dressing. So while flannel shirts and slip dresses took over in the years when Tumblr reigned supreme in the early days of Millennials, today Gen Z has made their own tartan miniskirts, baggy jeans and cardigans and shows off on IG and Tik Tok.
In short, 30 years and we are still here to talk about it … If you too feel nostalgia for grunge style, we have prepared for you a selection of perfect garments to mix to pay homage to the most famous "non-fashion" ever!
